Food Security Programs - Gabriola Island

Provided by People for a Healthy Community on Gabriola Society (PHC)

Provide food to those who need it while fostering social connections, sustainability and good health in the community
The following programs are offered:
  • Grocery Program (Food Bank): Program distributes foods to individuals and families in need. This could mean you or a loved one is finding it financially challenging to afford food. Grocery pick-up is available at PHC. Click here to see the food bank schedule.
  • Food Recovery Program: The Food Recovery Program, in partnership with Nesters Food Market, addresses food insecurity and waste. Volunteers sort and redistribute unsellable food into three categories:
    • For The People: Usable food is distributed through PHC programs like the Grocery Program, School Hot Lunch, Adult Day Program, Soup Socials, and Building Food Skills Programs.
    • For The Animals: Unusable human food is given to local farmers for animal feed.
    • For The Gardens: Inedible food is composted to nourish PHC's garden produce, supporting programs like the School Garden Program.
  • Soup Socials: Provides free or by-donation nutritional meals. This is an event within the community to share a meal which fosters social connection and strengthens relationships among our community in a casual setting.
  • Growing Food In Our Gardens: Facilitates the learning of gardening skills with the elementary school students who help and learn in the gardens weekly during Fall and Spring.
  • Building Food Skills: Provides opportunities, such as Community Kitchen Workshops, to develop food skills for cooking and eating healthier. These workshops strengthen social connections and overall community wellness. Some of our building food skill programs are Kids' Cooking Classes, Ladies' Lunch Clubs, and Men's Dinner Clubs.
  • Farmer's Market Coupon: Program supports both low-income community members and farmers. Low-income seniors and families with children under 18 are given free coupons that they can redeem on select items from farmers at the local market.
  • Good Food Box Program: The Good Food Box, in partnership with Nanaimo Foodshare, offers fresh produce at affordable prices.
